Maria Bermudez is a dancer who many of us admire. It is an incredible compliment
to her that she has chosen to bring such talented flamenco artists, the majority
of them from Jerez de la Frontera, to Las Vegas. I know that many reviewers
will write articles about Maria. In this case, much like Maria, I choose to
pay homage to some of the other talented artists who performed for us on June
17, 2003.
Although the audience was a small one, with perhaps filling only one-fourth
of the theater, they were appreciative and knowledgeable of this exotic and
explosive art form. For those who have yearly followed Maria's Sonidos Gitanos
productions in the States, it was truly a pleasure to see the return of Andres
Pena, a dynamic powerhouse. Approximately two years ago, Maria brought together
Andres, and Domingo Ortega to the dance floor. All I can say is that it was
like dueling footwork, with each trying to out dance the other. To Andres credit,
he is still as formidable as ever, with lightning speed, jumps, and perfect
accentuated footwork. Personally, I am still in awe of this young man's tremendous
energy and talent.
After the performance, many students and friends asked me of my opinion concerning
Antonio, "El Pipa." The word that explicitly describes him is "artist."
I have no doubt, because I have seen it before, that Antonio could, if he wanted
to, easily dance the traditional gypsy flamenco style. What Antonio has choosen
to be is an artist. The man is aware of timing and form, and to his credit,
has done a perfect job of combining the traditional with the modern.
One can only express thanks to the other talented musicians and singers. To
have "El Mono," one of the most revered and respected singers in Las
Vegas is such an honor. Luis de la Tota, percussionist, was outstanding, as
usual. The "heartbeat" which he contributes to every performance is
unreal. Every dancer's dream is to have such an incredible machine, (He absolutely
never, ever misses a cue.) supporting her/his work during a performance.
In closing, I am sorry for those who did not have the opportunity to attend
such a performance, and for those who did - it was was a slice of sophisticated
flamenco heaven in a provincial neon world.
